Microsoft has released a new app for wirelessly transferring videos and photos from mobile devices to the Windows 10 Microsoft Photos app.

The photo-transfer app, dubbed Photos Companion, is purely for sending photos and videos from an Android or iOS device to Microsoft's built-in Photos app on Windows 10.

The transfer service is based around QR codes and Wi-Fi and works so long as the Windows 10 PC is on the same network as the Android or iOS device you want to move photos or videos from.

The QR code is used to connect the mobile app with the Photos app on Windows 10. Users select the photos they want to transfer from the companion app and then use settings in the Photos app to begin transferring them over Wi-Fi.

While anyone can download the Photo Companion app, developers at Microsoft Garage and Photos teams built the app with classrooms that rely on Windows 10 in mind.

Last year Microsoft staff visited classrooms in the US and Europe to ask teachers to try its Windows 10 Photos app.

Microsoft found that students were great at telling stories through video, but they had difficulties transferring content from multiple smartphones to a single PC where media projects are created.

"The biggest hurdle many classrooms faced was getting the content students had captured with their phones onto their project PCs," Microsoft explains. Using and finding cables meanwhile can be time-consuming.

And while a cloud file-sharing service could do the job, in a school scenario that option might be blocked due to network constraints whereas Wi-Fi access between devices was good. So the Garage and Photos team opted for a Wi-Fi based direct transfer system.

"Our solution was to build an app that would support direct wireless transfer between any phone or mobile device and the Photos app on any Windows 10 PC. This would enable students to transfer media to their own computers or to a shared, project PC without worrying about network speeds or mobile data charges," the Microsoft Garage team explains.

This is the most well known service out of the three. You won’t have to install Xcode because it comes preinstalled. You can also do pay-as-you-go so it’s a pretty low commitment. Some people complain that it’s slow but you can try it out for yourself since it’s only about a buck an hour!

Another service where you can rent a Mac with Xcode for development. Unfortunately I haven’t heard too much about this one so I can’t speak very much about it.

Of course, as the team notes, people outside school environments may also find the direct transfer system useful, so Microsoft released it for all.

What’s new in Windows 10

Our Regular readers will already have got to enjoy some of the new Windows 10 thanks to the screenshots and video of the build leaked during the summer. Among the main new features (and deducted from the official leak) we find the ability to open the Windows Store app on the Desktop, the Virtual Desktop, the center notifications, Cortana, new icons and the ability to choose whether to display the Start screen like that of Windows 8 Start menu or a hybrid between it and that of Windows 7. we can assure you that what we have seen is still far from what will be the final version of the operating system, which will melt once and for all Windows, Windows Phone Xbox and providing the same user experience, seriously. Installation Guide for Windows 10 Technical Preview

Windows 10 Technical Preview is a preview version dedicated to enterprise and insiders, and not to the general public for home use; it is an unstable and incomplete version than the version that will be made public in the second half of 2015 and this could result in the loss of your data or other problems which neither we nor Microsoft we be considered responsible: in other words, if you want install it, you can do it at your own risk.

To download Windows 10 must register at this address. Once downloaded the ISO fit your computer or tablet from the link at the bottom of the article (choosing from the 32-Bit and 64-Bit), you will have several options to install and test the Preview of Windows 10. Do not go down in detail, but just give some ideas on the various methods of installation, since it is assumed to be tested almost exclusively by geeks.

The easiest way is undoubtedly the one that provides a clean installation on a computer or a tablet formatted (you can also format with the Windows installer 10). For this choice you’ll need a forklift or you’ll have to sacrifice your only car. You can start the installation by loading the contents of the ISO to a DVD or a USB drive with this guide from which then you will have to boot.

As a second option, always sacrificing your only car, you can mount the ISO of Windows 10 with the appropriate command of Windows 8 and start the setup directly from the latter. During the preliminary stages you will be asked if you want to store programs, apps and documents, only documents or anything (almost equivalent to a format, in which case the entire contents of the old C: \ will be stored in a folder C: \ Windows. Alte then be retrieved after installation). But be careful, because you might not be able to complete the installation if your operating system to start is in Italian, in which case you must follow this procedure.

You can also create a partition, through gesione disk or third party programs, and install Windows 10 in it: in this way you will get a practical dual-boot system that will allow you to choose from, each time the PC, if you access one or all ‘other operating system. We tested this procedure on our Surface Pro 3 and is probably one of the most valid.

Same thing is true of the partition if you have no way to add a second HDD to your PC.

Another solution involves the installation painless Windows 10 in a virtual machine, for example in Hyper-V.

You can create a VHD in which to install Windows 10, a kind of virtual partition. Although seemingly one of the solutions is less invasive, does not allow you to install the frequent updates from a build to another Windows 10, and for this we feel sconsigliarla.

Getting Excited for Windows 8

At Michell Consulting Group, we always look forward to checking out new gadgets and software, and since Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system is so fresh and unique compared with previous iterations, we are interested to see how it will impact businesses.

Windows 8 has a lot of unique capabilities that are new to Windows that we think are going to change the way companies do business. There have been mixed reviews since the Windows 8 Consumer Preview was made available a couple months ago; there have been some widely positive reviews, and negative reviews tend to slant towards the fact that Windows 8 feels like it might be stretching too thin trying to be both a desktop OS and a mobile device OS at once. However, this is the very reason Windows 8 is going to be huge for small and medium-sized businesses.

Finally Eliminate the Bridge between Desktop and Mobile

For the first time, Windows 8 will allow us to have the same platform on our desktop computer as we do on our mobile device. Gone are the days of drastically limited functionality, compatibility issues, and limited formatting for documents. What you use on your desktop and laptop will be on your tablet. While we are still several months away from seeing Windows 8 on consumer electronics and PCs (it’s estimated that Windows 8 will be released around October 2012), the idea of a full-fledged Windows experience on a 7-inch tablet ultra-portable tablet is extremely attractive.

It’s Windows but with Mobile Capabilities

Just because it’s ready to run on a tablet doesn’t mean they are skimping out on what makes Windows so great for businesses. Yes, features like touch screen optimization and a slick new interface built for finger swiping have been added, but nothing is being taken away. Windows 8 will see improvements to security features found in previous versions of Windows as well as even better group policies, virtualization and remote capabilities. From an IT standpoint, these are exciting features that will improve internal and external security and flexibility.

While we’ve only been able to play with pre-released versions of Windows 8, so only time will tell, but for now we are excited to see some of the new features come into play for businesses
